Friday Five

Friday Five

Watch Now

My seniors graduated over the weekend, and my last middle school class was YESTERDAY! Hooray, I officially survived my 20th year in education! I hope that you are rounding the bend to the end of your school year too. Regardless, CONGRATULATIONS are in order... you survived the madness that is May.

The beginning of June marks my favorite season: SUMMER READING! School year reading is in the books (no pun intended). Summer reading means sunshine (or rain, if you're from the Pacific Northwest like me), free choice, road trip audiobooks, vacation reads, or staying up all night with a good book.

Every day this summer, I'll be posting my favorite new books on social media. There may even be a #FridayFive video or two... stay tuned! Follow @MrsYuskoLibrary on Instagram or Twitter, or like Mrs. Yusko's Library on Facebook for my daily recommendations.

If you'd like some good suggestions for the readers in your life to get started NOW, check out the "Summer Reading" lists below! Every year for the last 16+ I have created these Summer Reading Book Lists of suggestions for ALL ages, (Preschool through High School), and 2019 is no exception.

Happy Summer and Happy Reading!

My Summer Reading Suggestions for all! PreK/K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th, 6th-8th, and High School. I've ** my Top 10+ titles directly on the lists for elementary grades. I've created separate Top 10+ lists for each grade 6th-12th, as well as a Top 10 Elementary.

Share with anyone you know that needs a good read this summer...family and friends...coworkers...parents of students in your class…print it out and attach it to the fridge...put holds on all the books you want to read all summer...use it however you see fit! (Adults: there are some GREAT titles on the High School list).

The lists are divided by grade level, from PreK/Kindergarten through high school. Students of all ages, reading levels, and interests will find something good to read, I promise! Many students will find LOTS to read. The lists are designed for students "graduating" from the grade levels listed, but some students will also find titles of interest on the lists above and below their grade level. You know your student best so make sure to take a look at several of the lists.

And in case you're worried that you'll run out of books to read, never fear! I have many GREAT books to share with you all summer long. Follow me on Facebook @Mrs. Yusko's Library or on Instagram @MrsYuskoLibrary.

Updated: May 17, 2019

In honor of Teacher Appreciation AND the fact that I just finished my LAST #yalit seminar of the 2018-2019 school year, I've lowered the price of several resources and created a sale bundle on my TPT site.

You can get my "What's New in YA Lit" seminar handbook (all 200+ pages of it) as a PDF (sorry, I'm not killing any more trees) for $29 right now! I've also bundled this handbook, the seminar presentation slides, and a Kid Lit bibliography for $32.30. Check out my TPT store here!

I've lowered the prices on all of my handbooks, highlighting the best books of 2018, 2017, and 2016. Buy the current one, buy all 3... this is a great time to get them.

Happy reading!

PS: The 2019 "Best New Books" handbook will go live at the end of 2019. Stay tuned.

Getting ready to present last year's seminar.

"So many books, so little time." Any avid reader will tell you that is the story of their (reading) life. I've been know to use it as a hashtag. You might think that this is hyperbole, but this sentiment is pretty much how I feel every day, especially as Labor Day Weekend rolls around.

Why is that? In addition to my teacher-librarian hat, and my #FeednRead literacy coordinator hat, I also present seminars around the country on "Best New Books" every year. In order to be prepared to talk about the best new books, I am ALWAYS reading. Always. I am also constantly afraid of missing some spectacular book. There really are too many new books published every year, and just not enough time to read them all.

Why does Labor Day weekend spark fear in the hearts of...well, me? Because that marks the point that I have to STOP READING (*gasp*) and put together the current year's handbook of titles before the mid-September deadline. (Yes, I am a procrastinator. Also, can we talk about how mid-September is a ridiculous deadline when SO MANY BOOKS are published between October and December every year? Sometimes I have to guess and hope for the best. Hooray for addendums!)

I look forward to seeing you on my 2018-19 school year "Magical Librarian Tour" (my name for it)! If there isn't a seminar in your area this year, holler. I'd love to come visit your school/district! If money is an object, and there is no professional development budget, subscribe to my website to access my "mini" webinars every month. It's just like getting the full-day seminar I do for BER (Bureau of Education & Research) in smaller segments throughout the school year...and you can watch in your PJs from the comfort of your living room (or at school on your lunch "hour"😂). Happy Reading! If you're back at school, enjoy the long weekend. If you're starting school next week, enjoy those last few days of summer vacation. If you need me, I'll be madly trying to make dent in my TBR pile. 📚
